01/13/05Organizing in 2005 #

Helen Fern

2005 is going to be my year to quit my regular job and do my art full time.  I'm starting off by redecorating and organizing my office/studio/guest room.  I'm looking for ideas.

I do beadwork, scrapbooking, sculpt faerie dolls and paint on glassware (primary business).  I also sell Avon products.

My room is my glass studio, my business office and it has a futon to sleep guests.  I'm going to paint this week end - and then comes everything else -

Here's where you come in.  I'm seeking ideas from you who have tried and true methods of organizing everything that goes into a studio/office/guest room.  Please feel free to email me directly,  ( helenfern@msn.com) or maybe a post will help others in the same dilema!

Thanks in advance!!

Helen

"Putting on the Glitz" a new network for jewelry designers and beaders is now open.

If you have the same kind of passion as I for making beaded jewelry or other types of beaded items, by all means drop in and let's get to know each other.

Thanks Lorraine. I know it's a bit out of date, with the holidays and working at Disney I haven't had the time to update it. :( I'm hopefully going to get to it this weekend. Thanks for the advice and thanks for the comment on the jewelry. :)

Craft fairs that you attend need to be researched.

first, if you are a new comer of course you are going to make the normal mistakes. I know, I have been there and done that..lol..

Second, if you believe in your work then the first couple fairs should be more of getting your business out in the public. Spend time with those who enter your booth. Talk, and share your passions. Your first step into building a trust and relationship. Mingle with other vendors..so bring along a helper!

third, do not bring so much that you are going nuts on displays..Create an eye catching display and keep it simple with the best of your best the first few time around.

Think of your first couple craft fairs as an investigation period. Learn...Learn..and have fun.
No one wants to purchase from a sad looking person. Consumers are attracted to happy, well mannered owners. Remember this is also their time to relax and enjoy the day.

I will be perfectly honest, it may take a good year of planning and researching what is the best time and best place for your shows..but patience and a good plan will take you so much farther...Also when handing out your cards please make sure if you have a web site it is completed.
Make sure you have a way for payment and your contact information is located there. Online shoppers are "gotta have now" or they move on.

It is always important to advertise yourself. This is your business and if you dont advertise then no one will know you exist. Online businesses fail quicker than anything around due to lack of putting their money in the right places. I have seen it too often that everyone wants to build their business for free. Hey, this is the 21st century. Nothing is free..except happiness. Determine your advertising budget before you start. There are plenty of places to advertise effectively and affordably.

Hope this helps and I wish you much success!

Hi Helen, our print directory is a simple yet nice looking booklet. Right now since we are just starting the road trip part of Partnership Market the booklet is only 4 pages but as we grow it will grow. Inside is Partnership Market's information and vendors information plus business article URL's and so on. We will place them each month at truck stops & other places we stop while I ride with my husband.
We do not know our destination as he is a truck driver and we go where the loads lead us. Which is great because one day we may be in Mississippi and by evening Georgia.

The Directory is updated each month and available online for partners to also print and hand out if they choose.
Partnership Market is really cool but it is going to take time to build it right and build it with integrity. I aim to focus more on artisans and Barb is going to focus on business. She has so much knowledge there..

Computer whiskers are nice little gadgets that clean you computer screen. You can view everything at:

What avenues do you use offline?  I sell retail over the internet.  What type of business directory do you hand out and what are computer whiskers??

Thanks!

I've found that craft faires cost more in time and energy than the sales the generate.  Is there anyway to find one that is worth it??
