heathcliff | | SCOUT PROFILE: SUVAJIT SINHA
Twenty nine year old Suvajit Sinha loves fun, adventure and taking new challenges. As a child he joined the Bharat Scouts and Guides Society and before long he was trekking, rock climbing, camping and hiking with his team. As a student of St.Lawrence High School he excelled at all track and field events during his school days. When Suvajit was eleven he was selected by the Sports Authority of India to represent the West Bengal Hockey Team in the National Sports Talent Contest. At thirteen he participated in the Marathon Race organized in Kolkata to mark the Birth Anniversary of St.Ignatius Loyla.
Suvajit represented his school in the Himalayan Adventure Course from 27 December 1990 to 4th January 1991 at Buxa Tiger Reserve, Jalpaiguri. He recalls, “It was a tremendous experience. The Himalayan landscape is breathtaking. We camped by the river. Travelled a long way every day with our luggage - we actually reached the Bhutan border. It was tiring but great fun.....I like adventure...I would always choose to camp instead of taking a luxury tour”
On 31st March 1993 Suvajit was awarded the prestigious Rajya Purashkar for outstanding achievement as a Scout - an honour from the Governor of West Bengal. “I’m proud to be a scout. The Scouting Society is after all the largest youth organization of the world. Of course, being a scout gives one plenty of scope for adventure, but our main aim is serving the society. We’ve spent many a puja doing pandal duty instead of hanging out with friends, organized road safety awareness programmes, and day care programmes for the handicapped. Discipline is another important thing we’ve been taught as a scout. The whole experience has made me confident and in the long run has helped me to be a better citizen.” Suvajit has now completed Advanced Training Course for Scout Master and is working as a scout instructor at the Andhra Association School. He is now the District Scout Secretary at South Calcutta Bharat Scouts & Guides.
Besides sporting activities, Suvajit has participated in singing contests, dance dramas and debates. He was also a member of his school’s nature and literary clubs.
Suvajit made sure that his extra-curriculars never got in the way of his studies. He has an impressive academic record through out - he secured 4 letters in his Madhyamik Examination. He graduated with Chemistry Honours from Ashutosh College and thereafter studied Marketing Management at the Institute of Engineering and Management under Kalyani University where he was very popular among his class-mates and had been elected the class representative. As a 2nd year MBA student Suvajit organized a 10 day Industrial Tour at Hyderabad for 90 people. He was awarded a scholarship and first class marks in MBA. Suvajit worked on a detailed project at Reliance Infocomm for three months and was among the 6 out of 40 candidates selected through campus recruitment by BMW Industries Limited. After working with BMW Industries Limited for 10 months, Suvajit joined German Remedies Ltd working there as a Marketing Executive.
When this young man is not studying or trekking, he is reading Bengali fiction and listening to melodies of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle, in his Hazra home. He’s both a wanderer and a home-lover.
